Green Bay is known as "The Gateway to the Great Waterway". Because of its strategic location on Lake Michigan, ships from all over the the world visit this port. Green Bay has a strong economy centered mainly on paper mills, trucking, insurance and the food industry, particularly dairy. In addition, the NFL Green Bay Packers also help to support the local economy.

We are especially proud of the fact that in June 1999 the Green Bay areas was declared one of 10 cities in America to receive the "All-America City Award' from the National Civic League and Allstate Insurance Company. The All-America City Award is the oldest and most respected community recognition program in the nation. This is an award that celebrates innovation, cooperation and effort in addressing community issues like the quality of education, diversity and neighborhood development.

Green Bay boasts public and private school systems that are highly recognized nationally. A strong library system and numerous opportunities for extra-curricular activities insure a well-balanced learning and living experience. Recreational opportunities abound with Triangle Park (for tubing, skiing and sledding), zoos, a wild life sanctuary and museums. In addition, there are walking, biking, and hiking trails (Mountain Bay Trail stretches from Green Bay's west side through Pulaski all the way to Wausau. Green Bay also sponsors a 10K Bellin Run and a marathon every year. Several other different walking, running, biking, and roller-blading events are held throughout the year.

You may decide to take in a football game at Lambeau Field watching the Green Bay Packers. Other local sports teams include the NBA Milwaukee Bucks, the Gamblers (hockey) and the Timber Rattlers (baseball).

Green Bay is 1/2 hr. from the Fox Valley and one hour from Milwaukee, WI, which has the largest shopping mall in the state. Chicago, IL is three hours away.

The Green Bay urban area is served by five public school districts: the Green Bay Area Public School District, and the Ashwaubenon, De Pere, West De Pere and the Howard-Suamico School Districts. The five districts have 59 schools for public education. Total school enrollment for the five districts is over 30,000. There are also 30 parochial schools for students from kindergarten through high school. The Green Bay area has consistently led the nation and the state in both American College Test (ACT) and Student Aptitude Test (SAT) scores.

The school systems offer complete programs for exceptional students, including early college attendance and aid for the mentally retarded, blind and partially sighted, the deaf and hard of hearing, the emotionally disturbed, and the speech and physically handicapped.

Higher Education
Higher education facilities include the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, (part of a statewide university system) with an enrollment of over 5,500, a regional institution with a broad range of programs including business, natural and biological sciences and arts and humanities; Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, with an enrollment of over 6,800, offering vocational, technical and adult education; and St. Norbert College, a private liberal arts school operated by the Norbertine Fathers, with an enrollment of over 2,100. Bellin College of Nursing offers a four-year degree in nursing. There are also other trade or vocational schools specializing in particular skills.

Partners in Education (PIE) is coordinated by the Green Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, provides the link between businesses, educators, and community organizations with an objective to assist all students in developing the skills necessary for successful transition from school to an eventual career involving lifelong learning. People provide a learning environment where young people grow, develop, and find networks of support. Partners in Education involves community organizations, area businesses, post-secondary institutions, and public and private schools.
