Fredericksburg, Virginia

Fredericksburg was laid out in 1728 on a site originally used as an Indian village. Such national figures as George Washington, George Mason, Thomas Jefferson, and James Monroe made the area their home at times. The nearby Rappahannock River was a military border during the civil war, and in December of 1862, General Lee's troops fought on the streets of Fredericksburg. Military campaigns continued in the area throughout the duration of the war. A recent effort has been made by the community of Fredericksburg to restore historic buildings from the area, giving the historic downtown area a facelift. Today, the area has become a popular tourist attraction and has drawn new businesses to the neighborhood.

The forty-block National Historic Register District includes attractions such as restored homes, antique shops, fine restaurants, galleries, and craft boutiques. Surrounding areas offer a wide array of recreational activities for the entire family. Fishing, swimming, boating, and other water sports are all available on the nearby rivers and lakes. Hiking and biking trails also dot the surrounding hillsides. Fredericksburg's location is also situated between Washington D.C. and Richmond, giving residence easy access to larger urban areas from a relatively secluded environment.

Fredericksburg and its surrounding areas offer an abundance of activities for young and old alike. Whether it be a walk through the historic downtown district, a hike in the surrounding hills, or swimming in the nearby rivers and lakes, there is something for all ages year round.
