Culpeper County was cut off from Orange County by an act of the Virginia House of Burgesses in the year 1748, effective 1749. The original territory included what are now the three counties of Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock. Culpeper County lies in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a total population of about 28,000. Culpeper is approximately 60 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. and 45 miles north of Charlottesville, VA. Culpeper's scenic views and rich history help to enhance the pleasant atmosphere of this small community. The Countys lakes, rivers, streams, and woodlands make it an oasis for the hunter and fisherman. Culpeper County is an ideal place to look back into America's history. Several Civil War battles took place inside the borders of Culpeper County and a few famous figures have marked the history of the county itself.
