Annandale, Virginia
Population: 68,301
Located in Fairfax County
Annandale is unique in that its history can be traced directly to the pre-Revolutionary period, when, in 1685, an Englishman by the name of Col. William H. Fitzhugh purchased over 24,000 acres of land and his descendants later named the tract "Ravensworth." From an untamed wilderness, Fitzhugh converted the land into one of the largest tobacco plantations in Northern Virginia. Today, in the city, Fitzhugh is a name that can still be found in the phone book, and many Fitzhugh family members take an active part in making sure Annandale is the best city it can possibly be. Annandale is in an ideal location, being only 15 miles from Washington D.C. on the other side of the river, which gives it an element of separation, while still being a comfortable commute for those who work in Washington D.C. Annandale is bustling these days. For the past several years, the Annandale Central Business District (CBD) Planning Committee, Fairfax County, and the State of Virginia have been working with Annandale's civic and business community to improve the area known as the Annandale Village Center. Tasteful entryway signs surrounded by seasonal plantings mark the boundaries of the central business district. Annandale Tollhouse Park, designed by the Fairfax County Park Authority, is prominently located at the intersection of Annandale Road and Little River Turnpike and ties Annandale's future improvements. Regular "Clean-Ups" are held in downtown Annandale as the entire community joins forces with the Virginia Department of Transportation, Clean Fairfax, and the Annandale CBD Planning Committee to keep Annandale neat and clean. Annandale's merchants recently have enjoyed a "Business Recognition" program. Selected businesses are given a special "thank you" for giving a little extra to the community. Look for recognition stickers proudly displayed in the window of your favorite business. It acknowledges that special "extra" that they contributed to the community. This is a fairly large city of 54,994 residents, but through the efforts of the community, it has retained a small town/village feel. Homes here range in size and value, depending on the need of the individual. The main advantage is housing is more reasonable here than in Washington D.C., and yet is close enough for a convenient commute. The average home price here in the area is $260,000. This buys a home of approximately 1,500 square feet, with three comfortably sized bedrooms. There are historic homes, new homes, apartments, for those who desire to rent, and condo's for those who don't want the hassle of caring for a yard, while still enjoying the beauty of a garden. For an area that is growing so quickly, Annandale is well able to supply all the demands of home owners and tenants. For a place where people still call you by name and ask how you are, and really mean it, Annandale tops the list. Come and visit and we guarantee you'll never want to leave!
