As befits the Vermont lifestyle, the Green Mountain State's second-largest city isn't exactly urban. If this were California, the pace would be called "laid back." But in Vermont, and in the Town of Rutland, where adults comprise 60 percent of the population and elderly adults comprise another 16 percent, the pace is just a bit slow. But why move fast when out the windows of any Rutland home is the beauty of the Green Mountains to be enjoyed. For a little action, just 12 miles outside of Rutland is Castleton State College, home of the Spartans. In the town itself, the historically preserved downtown bustles (relatively speaking). Shopping is as plentiful as you'd want it if you live life by the Vermont clock. In fact, Rutland is home to Vermont's second-largest mall. No bright lights, big city here. Rather, the value of an easygoing, low-stress existence can't be underestimated these days, and for that Rutland is truly a Green Mountain gem. Rutland's downtown boomed with the marble industry after 1850. By 1880 the cities population had tripled. Marble was used extensively in the construction or embellishment of many architecturally significant buidings. In fact, marble quarrying, begun c.1845, still flourishes nearby. Since 1976 a great deal of restoration has been accomplished. Significant buildings include the Rutland Savings Bank, the Opera House, the Gryphon Buidling, and many other buildings in and around Downtown. Many fine Victorian homes of the era still stand behind the Main Street Park between Route 7 and Downtown. Many buildings along Merchants Row and Center Street are noted on the National Register of Historic Places. When visiting Downtown Rutland take advantage of the Walking Tour of Historic Downtown Rutland - a collaboration of the Rutland Area Cultural Alliance and the University of Vermont Historic Preservation Program.
