The community of Wichita Falls sits in the northernmost part of Texas, with Oklahoma City and Dallas a two hour drive away. The city of 104,000 people borders the townships of Burkburnett and Iowa Park that add another 17,000 people to the area. Sheppard Air Force Base provides training and facilities to almost 35,000 active duty, retiree and civilian personnel. Sheppard is the headquarters for the European NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program. This program is the only one of its kind in the world and trains our allies' most promising fighter pilots. The base also supports several technical training schools for U.S. military service members. Sheppard AFB is the largest employer in the area with 3,700 permanent party, an average of 5,700 students, and 4,041 civilian employees. The estimated impact of SAFB on local economy is $612 million annually. In addition, there are three American Legions and four Veterans of Foreign Wars posts within the community. The Municipal Airport is co-located with Sheppard's airfield. Wichita Falls offers its citizens and visitors a unique blend of culture and western heritage. The Parks and Recreation Department, River Bend Nature Works, Lake Texoma, Lake Arrowhead State Recreational Park, Lake Kickapoo and Possum Kingdom Lake provide year round local activities, recreational water sports & campgrounds within easy driving distance. On the performing arts scene, Wichita Falls' Museum and Arts Center provides artistic and cultural programs, laser light shows, displays, and a children's discovery center.
