Plano, Texas Plano is an upper-middle class suburb that lies a few miles north of Dallas. Located within the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington metropolitan area (the Metroplex), Plano has grown into the ninth largest city in the state of Texas. Plano’s strong economy, quality schools and high standards of living has earned top spots, placing at number 11 on CNN/Money Magazine’s ‘Best Places to Live in the United States in 2006 and voted as the ‘Best Place to Live in the Western United States’ in 2005. With the lowest poverty rates and highest median incomes in the US, Plano is known for being a wealthy community, with the western part of the city being the most affluent.
Home to more than 30 corporate headquarters’, mostly located on Legacy Drive. And with its proximity to the Telecom Corridor, a number of semiconductor and telecommunications companies are located in Plano’s Research and Technology District. Some of companies include: Cadbury Schweppes, Countrywide, Electronic Data Systems, Ericsson, Frito Lay, Infosys Technologies, Insight Enterprises, Metromedia Restaurant Group, PetroTel, JCPenney, Perot Systems, Raytheon, Rent-A-Center, Texas Instruments, Triad Hospitals, and UGS. Recently, Plano has made a concerted effort to draw retail to the area in an effort to boost sales tax returns. The newly constructed Shops at Legacy features apartments and an Angelika Film Center, while The Shops at Willow Bend is the city's new, upscale mall. Plano Independent School District serves most of Plano. Due to a massive increase in student enrollment over the past few decades, Plano consists of a unique "high school" system, in which grades 9-10 attend a high school and grades 11-12 attend a senior high. There are three senior high schools (grades 11-12) in PISD; Plano East, Plano Senior, and Plano West. In 2006, Plano Independent School District announced that 115 seniors were selected as National Merit Semifinalists, the largest in the district's history. Small portions of Plano are served by the Lewisville Independent School District, Frisco Independent School District, and Allen Independent School District. Plano is the home to two campuses of the Collin County Community College District, one at the Courtyard Center on Preston Park Boulevard and the larger Spring Creek Campus on Spring Creek Parkway at Jupiter. SMU in Legacy, of Southern Methodist University, is a graduate university serving the needs of 3,000 working professionals. Its academic programs include business, engineering and computer training, education and continuing education. It also features The Guildhall that offers a Masters program in video game development.
