In a quiet segment, north-west of San Antonio's bustling downtown is the small, peaceful city of Leon Valley. This city of 9,000 people boasts its own police and fire department. Located between the 410 and the 1604 Loops, Leon Valley is a great place for those who work in the medical field, and those who work at UTSA, or USAA. Thirty years ago this area was farmland, today it is mostly suburban, but don't be surprised to see a couple of goat farms, and even some stables around. There are pockets of open land, lending a country feel to what would otherwise be a very busy place. Leon Valley is a very family oriented neighborhood, with Little League and soccer fields right next to the playground, picnic areas, and nature walks all found at the Raymond Rimkus Park. Across the street is the small Leon Valley library, where all the librarians know your name, and preference in books. Every Wednesday the local farmers hold a small market, in the parking lot of the library. Plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can be found here! For other shopping there is a brand new Wal-Mart five minutes away, and several strip malls in the area, offering a gamut of entertainment, restaurants, and stores. For a choice in homes, look no further than Leon Valley! From cozy to palatial, from duplex to several acres, Leon Valley has it all! Communities like Forest Oaks offer single family homes ranging in price from $85,000 to $150,000 with homes anywhere from 1,800 square feet to 3,000 square feet. Homes tend to be built on slightly larger than normal lots, and with all the Live Oak trees, there's a lot of privacy, shade and beauty. Many communities offer a community pool, tennis court and club house too. Several communities also have an "in community" school. In other words, the school is built in the middle of the sub-division and most of the children walk to and from school. This adds to the sense of family, as one can see the "grandmas" of the sub looking out for the kids as they walk. New sub-divisions have sprung up, and range in price from $80,000 to $300,000 for some of the larger homes on several acres of land. These homes tend to range in size from 1,600 square feet to over 3,500 square feet. There are several apartment complexes too, which is great for those who do not wish to buy a home. Leon Valley has everything from one bedroom apartments up to townhomes with three bedrooms. Many of the apartment complexes also offer a fitness room, pool and outdoor exercise facilities. Leon Valley is served by the Northside Independent School District, and many of the schools are considered Texas Exemplary Schools. Northside is known in the San Antonio area for spending money wisely, and making the most of their resources to ensure students receive a top-notch education. O'Connor High School offers an agricultural program that is known state wide, and Marshall High has some of the state's best musicians. For tertiary education you don't have to leave this fine city!
