Gatesville is a friendly community in Coryell County, deep in the heart of Central Texas between Highway 84 and Highway 36 just a few miles from Ft. Hood, 95 miles from Austin, and 130 miles from Dallas. Gatesville is a diverse community with a population of 15,591 the economy is based on retail and agriculture. Gatesville has of the lowest crime rates in the state, along with one of the highest percentages of closed cases and recovered property. Gatesville is rich in history. Coryell County was founded in 1854 and Gatesville became the county seat a few months later. Incorporated in 1870, Gatesville grew slowly until the completion of the St. Louis & Southwestern Railroad spur in 1882 brought new people and new businesses, linking Gatesville to Waco and the rest of the country. Prosperity brought new homes, a fine new opera house (a frontier symbol of wealth and culture), and numerous civic improvements.
