Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States (340 square mile or 217,337 acre installation), and is the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two Armored Divisions.

In addition to the 1st Cavalry Division and 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood is also residence for Headquarters Command III Corps, 3d Personnel Group, 3d Signal Brigade, 3d Air Support Operations Group, 13th Corps Support Command (COSCOM), 13th Finance Group, 21st CAV Brigade (Air Combat), 89th Military Police Brigade, 504th Military Intelligence Brigade, the Dental Activity (DENTAC), the Medical Support Activity (MEDDAC), Test and Experimentation Command (TEXCOM), and various other units and tenant organizations.

Recreation availability on base is much the same as any other base but the surrounding areas have a lot to offer the residents of Fort Hood. Located a few minutes away is Belton Lake. Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is open year-round. Over 800 acres of year-round recreational excitement, including a beach, water slide, party pavilions, jet ski, paddle boats, boat ramps, nature trails, horseback riding, RV campground, fishing dock, cottages, playground, family picnic sites, primitive camping, marina boat storage, watercraft rentals, dry storage area and marina resale store. The newest addition to the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area facility is the mountain bike trails.

Also, close by in Austin is Travis Lake. Travis Lake has all the amenities of being on a lake. From swimming, boating, fishing, camping, hiking, and skiing to sunbathing, beach volleyball, and walks along the sandy beach, you are sure to find something to do to unwind after a long day. There is even a waterpark located at Volente beach!

The Killeen Independent School District serves about 29,000 students in a metropolitan area that stretches 400 square miles, from the town of Nolanville and Harker Heights, through Killeen and across the sprawling Fort Hood military post. The school district employs about 4,100 people, including about 2,000 teachers. KISD is composed of 25 elementary schools, eight middle schools and 4 high schools. For the first time KISD has been designated as a "Recognized District" from the Texas Education Agency. The "Recognized District" rating distinguishes KISD as one of the best in the state of Texas.
