The town is located on the original Tennessee River at the mouth of the Tellico River that was home to the Overhill Cherokee. This portion of river is now called the Little Tennessee River and was impounded by the Tennessee Valley Authority Tellico Dam. The impoundment caused an island to form that contains Fort Loudoun State Park and the Sequoyah Birthplace Museum. Sequoyah Birthplace Museum is near the site that Sequoyah was born in 1776 in the Cherokee village of Tuskegee.
