Seguin, Texas

Population: 22,011
Located in Guadalupe County

Seguin is a town small enough to have a friendly feeling . . . where the tree-lined streets are graced by Queen Anne homes and charming bungalows. This is a community of comfortable neighborhoods where families live among people of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds. Here good schools are a proud tradition. And we glory in a fine park that stretches along the beautiful Guadalupe River.

It's a town big enough to boast a top-rated, fast-growing university and a modern, well respected community hospital. More than 25,000 live within the city limits, enjoying a range of cultural and recreational opportunities, as well. The robust and diversified economy features a manufacturer of electronic products and a steel-making plant among our leading employers. It is the center for manufacturing - with plants producing everything from steel to electronic components to reclosable plastic bags.

Seguin is home to one of the country's finest liberal arts colleges, Texas Lutheran University, and boasts of a fine school system and a first-rate hospital.

Annual events include Fiesta Cinco de Mayo, the Freedom Fiesta -- the best 4th of July celebration in Texas, the Guadalupe County Fair & Rodeo on the second weekend in October, a Pecan Fest in November, and the Heritage Tour of Homes on the first weekend in December. The Guadalupe and San Marcos rivers flow through the county and provide water for recreational as well as residential, industrial, and agricultural uses. In addition, Seguin has been proclaimed the pecan capital of Texas, and the beautiful trees can be found throughout the county in backyards and in large orchards.

Seguin was founded in 1838, making it one of the oldest towns in Texas, and a century ago it was one of the most prosperous. The 19th-century heritage includes buildings, like the Magnolia Hotel, that date from the days of the Republic of Texas, and showplaces from the plantation South now gone with the wind. Many beautiful 19th- and early 20th-century homes can be seen by driving along the tree-shaded streets of old Seguin.

Our downtown is a sprawling collection of commercial and public buildings dating from the early 20th century, when brick replaced older wooden structures. The Downtown District has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, for its notable architectural and historical merit.
