Meriden, Connecticut

Population: 59,479
Located in New Haven County

Settled in 1661, Meriden's earliest residents were farmers. However, it soon became an industrial center, as the Quinnipiac River, which runs through the city, provided power for mills and factories. In the late 18th Century, it was such a prominent producer of silver and pewter ware that it became known as "the Silver City."

Today, Meriden is still a thriving commercial and industrial center, providing its citizens with fine services and a strong sense of community.

The residents of Meriden reflect it's diversity, covering a broad spectrum of occupations: skilled workers, small businessmen, professionals, and corporate managers. Many of the families have lived here for generations.

A fine public school system serves the needs of the city's youth. Eight elementary schools, three junior high schools, and two high schools provide for a strong educational foundation. In addition, there are also six parochial schools.

The Meriden Square Mall offers department stores, among them Filene's, J.C. Penney's, and Sears. Other shopping is available in smaller centers and along downtown streets, and bus service makes the New Haven and Waterbury shopping areas easily accessible. In keeping with its diversity, Meriden has churches that serve all faiths. Meriden's Midstate hospital provides full health care services. Meriden has ten city parks, a municipal golf course, two municipal swimming pools, as well as tennis courts to keep the family busy and active. For the mental stimulation, there is the Meriden Symphony and the Meriden Historical Society.
