Roanoke (pop. 94,911) is a city of neighborhoods, many of which are marked by signs put up by civic leagues and garden clubs that announce to the world their gateways. A city-sponsored partnership program provides neighborhoods with a vehicle for citizens, businesses and government to shape development. More information can be had by calling the city's Neighborhood Partnership at (540) 345-8250 or via its web site.

South Roanoke is known for its tree-lined streets, sidewalks, friendly atmosphere and neighborly charm. Developed from the turn of the century through the 1950s, it boasts a variety of architectural styles that reflect an upscale offering of the times in which they were built.

The heart of South Roanoke is the tri-corner intersection of 22nd Street, Richelieu and Crystal Spring avenues, a block away from Jefferson Street, which leads downtown. With the feel of a Norman Rockwell neighborhood of the 1950s, it contains a grocery, pharmacy, deli, Gothic sandstone church and post office. On the expansive firehouse lawn, children can be found playing pick-up football games, volleyball, lying kites and tossing Frisbees near the overarching Sugar Maples that line its sidewalks.

South Roanoke takes its name from the rural farmland it was at the turn of the previous century when it was south of everything in Roanoke. Today it is also headquarters of Carilion Health System, the region's primary health care provider. Roanoke Memorial Hospital and numerous related support facilities -- including a Ronald McDonald House -- can be found along its northern-most edge toward downtown, and it is in this area that a major biomedical facility has been jointly planned by Carilion, Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia.

Carilion has always been thought of as a responsible community resident. A large portion of its doctors and administrators reside in the neighborhood -- as do many business leaders -- so there is little worry as to the city's commitment to keeping the integrity and the charm of the area intact.

Coexisting with the neighborhood is the South Roanoke Sports Complex and Victory Stadium across from the hospital on either side of the Roanoke River. Both facilities are used for all manner of sports and events and are among the best assets of Roanoke's park system. A short walk up Wiley Drive along the river is Smith Park with its large playground and picnic shelter.
