Sumter is a small but growing city in the South Carolina Midlands. Sumter is also a city devoted to higher education with a branch campus of the University of South Carolina and Central Carolina Technical College offering two year degrees.

Shaw, a Sumter native and World War I pilot who was killed in action during a reconnaissance flight behind enemy lines.
