Reno, Nevada - 2008 Top 100 Winner

The gateway to the Sierra Nevada, Reno is a city that has it all. Known as "The Biggest Little City in the World," Reno is the center of commerce and culture in northern Nevada. Its 225,000 residents enjoy life in a high desert valley with easy access to Lake Tahoe, the playground of Nevada.

While the area is a popular destination for tourists, Reno is also a great place to call home. With a strong economy, affordable housing, good schools and a low cost of living, the area has seen double-digit growth over the past decade. Reno residents enjoy a fantastic quality of life and an ideal climate with more than 300 sunny days each year.

Reno was Nevada's original gambling and divorce capital - gaining national attention in the 1930s and '40s for its wide-open attitudes. Today, visitors can enjoy a visit to Reno's National Automobile Museum and the Nevada Museum of Art, or stroll the shaded grounds of the University of Nevada, Reno, the state's oldest college.

Set in the surreal natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada, Reno/Lake Tahoe's season of fun lasts all year. Blue skies, warm days and cool nights offer year-round outdoor recreation. With more annual snowfall than Utah or Colorado, Lake Tahoe's resorts guarantee skiing and riding fun into late spring. That's why you can hit the slopes in the morning and golf in the afternoon at one of Reno/Lake Tahoe's 39 golf courses, even in March!

Reno is within 30 minutes of Pyramid Lake. Pyramid Lake (which is named for a tufa rock formation on the eastern shore) remains as strikingly beautiful and as enchanting as it was before we came. Pyramid Lake is not like Tahoe. It is shallower, warmer, and substantially more alkaline than Tahoe, lower in elevation, and not so easily accessible. But these differences are not the decisive ones. Tahoe is charmingly beautiful. Pyramid is a shock; in addition to its primitive, challenging beauty, it projects a profound sense of antiquity. Gazing out across its surface is an experience almost four-dimensional. To enter the enchanted realm completely, proceed around the west side of the lake to the distinctive sawtooth formation at the northwestern corner of the lake: the needles. There is a hot spring here.

Reno is truly a paradise, whether you like your sports to be indoor or out. With an excellent economic base, great weather (snow comes but a couple of times a year) and wonderful schools, where else is there to live but here in Reno?
