New Ulm, Minnesota

Population: 13,000
Located in Brown County

New Ulm, founded in 1854 by German immigrants, is one of the most interesting and unique cities in the state. New Ulm clings to its ethnic heritage and savors the German flavor given to it by its pioneer settlers. The city's heritage is evident in the architecture, and especially in the neatness and care evident in the trim years and well-kept houses and store fronts, even in the precise layout of the city's streets.

Unlike most communities, which sprang up haphazardly on the frontier, New Ulm was a carefully planned colonization venture conceived in the minds of its farsighted founders. The name "New Ulm" was selected because many of the original settlers were from the province of Wurttemberg, Germany, of which Ulm is the principal city. New Ulm's Heritagefest, is rated number four in the Minnesota Department of Tourism's list of the top 25 community festivals in the state. A colorful combination of ethnic music, food and fun, the event takes place at the brown county fairgrounds annually.
