Livonia, Michigan

Population: 100,850
Located in Wayne County

Tucked between the urban environs of Detroit and the rural region west of Ann Arbor, Livonia has found a unique blend of both lifestyles to become a city with a thriving economy and the small town charm young families are looking for today.

Livonia was named the nation's seventh-safest city in a 1997 Money magazine survey, ranking ahead of number 13 Ann Arbor. A recent rating from Zero Population Growth ranked Livonia among the Top 10 cities in the nation to raise children, according to their Children's Environmental index, which considers such things as overcrowding and pollution.

With a population just over 100,000, Livonia is the eighth largest city in Michigan and second largest in Wayne County. At 36 square miles, Livonia has the fourth largest land area among Michigan cities.

The name Livonia comes from a province in what is now Western Russia. It was brought to the United States in the 1700s when Livonia, New York, was founded. In the 1790s, settlers from New York brought the name west when they came to Michigan.

Often tailed "the well-planned city," a highlight of living in Livonia is its vast array of recreational opportunities, including 1,800 acres of land set aside for recreational purposes. To preserve its rich history, Livonia has created the 103-acre Greenmead Historical Park, which includes a museum and preserved buildings from Livonia's early settler era of the mid- 1800’s.

Livonia is the proud home of two institutions of higher education: Schoolcraft College, a publicly supported community college with a nationally recognized faculty; and Madonna University, the second largest Catholic university in Michigan, which focuses on career and professional development through the liberal arts.

Livonia's thriving business community sets the economic development standard for other communities in Southeastern Michigan. Of the approximately 5,000 businesses in the city, more than 70 percent have their headquarters located in Livonia. The six-mile long industrial corridor is home to hundreds of manufacturing firms, tucked away from residential areas but close to the major railroad and highway access businesses seek. The retail market in Livonia also is thriving with three large malls and several neighborhood shopping centers.

One of the reasons Livonia is a first choice for people relocating to Southeastern Michigan is its variety and availability of housing. The city has both older neighborhoods featuring historic homes and new developments. Properties range from affordable starter homes for young families to more upscale homes for mid-career professionals

The 36 square miles of Livonia streets are kept safe by a Public Safety Department with 165 sworn officers and 26 civilian employees, and the 5-station Livonia Fire & Rescue providing both fire fighting and emergency medical service. In 1997, Money magazine ranked Livonia as the 7th-safest city in the United States, ahead of number 13, Ann Arbor. For several years, the FBI also has ranked Livonia among the Top 10 safest cities in the nation.
