Harper Woods, Michigan
Population: 14,254
Located in Wayne County
Caspar Salter first settled this land in 1850. In 1920, the first plat was recorded and was called Manchester Park. Other subdivisions followed, but the 1929 Depression brought the area back to virtual wilderness. The subdivisions began again in 1934, and a solid, home-owning community developed. It was renamed from its being in a heavily wooded area and from its then main thoroughfare, Harper Avenue. Harper Avenue, which begins in Detroit, was named for Walter Harper, founder of Harper Hospital, in Detroit. This area was finally incorporated as a city in 1951. Today Harper Woods is a family-friendly environment with plenty to offer its residents of all ages. With the lake nearby, Lake St. Clair that is, there are many summer and winter activities alike, from fishing in both seasons, to water skiing in the summer. Homes built in the 1930's are sturdy, and finely crafted, made of brick and well-proportioned. They range in size from a traditional "family home" of 1,500 square feet (families had smaller homes back then!) to something that perhaps an executive or a doctor of the day would build, a stately 3,000 or 4,000 square foot home, filled with crown molding and fine detail. As a result, homes prices vary greatly here, with an average home selling for $180,000 and the more executive ones for upwards of $500,000. Traveling around the metro Detroit area is a breeze if you live here in Harper Woods! Located right off I-94, and close to I-696, which leads to the I-75, Harper Woods is close to all points of the compass. If the nightlife and culture appeal to you, look no further than Detroit and its rejuvenated downtown! Not only is Detroit home to some of the best sports teams in the world, but is also home to the "Big Three" in the automotive industry. To that end, the Cobo Center hosts the American Auto Show every January, one of the biggest events in the world. And what an event it is! Thousands of cars, innovative creations sit side by side, to be touched and looked at by hundreds of thousands of people. There are many areas in Harper Woods for cycling, roller-blading, water sports, fishing, hiking, hunting or any other outdoor activity that catches your fancy.
