Winfield, KansasLocated in the rolling hills of southeast Kansas and edging the Walnut River, Winfield is home to excellent restaurants, extraordinary outdoor recreation, exciting history, exceptional shopping, Southwestern College, and the internationally-known Walnut Valley Festival. With an inspiring view of the prairie, the natural landscape introduces visitors to the magnificence of the Flint Hills. The Cowley County seat boasts 12,000 residents and during the school year over 1,000 additional students call Winfield home. Winfield is situated just off Interstate 35, 45 miles south of Wichita. Winfield has a growing economy with the Cowley county Rubbermaid Plant continually hiring new workers. This is part of a plan to expand the Winfield plant which will help to increase year round employment in the plant and the town. A normal day trip to Winfield can be relaxing and enjoyable even when there are no special events. Island Park, the site of the original Chautauquas in Winfield, today is a beautiful place to drive around or stroll through along with the ducks and geese. The park is at the North end of Main Street surrounded by the Timber Creek Lagoon. From late November through December the park is alight with a wonderful seasonal display. Cowley County Historical Museum is housed in a lovely old school building just a few blocks west of downtown. The downtown shopping area is alive and flourishing - definitely a place to try out. Other attractions include Southwestern College, Winfield City Lake and Timber Creek Marina, Winfield Community Theatre, Viet Nam Memorial Wall, Winfield City Band Summer Band Concerts, Chaplin Nature Center and Cherokee Strip Land Rush Museum. General Electric is a major employer in the area. |
