Located in north-central Idaho's panhandle, Moscow is cradled between Moscow Mountain and the rolling hills of the Palouse. The Palouse hills have unusually rich soils that produce high yields of wheat, barley, dry peas, lentils and rape seed, which supply an international market with quality food products. The USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council, headquartered in Moscow, recognizes the Palouse as the "Dry Pea & Lentil Capital of the Nation".

The University of Idaho enrolls more that 10,000 students from across the country and more than 60 foreign nations.

The area boasts a highly skilled and educated workforce employed by Moscow's many thriving businesses and the University of Idaho. Merchants offer an extensive selection of quality products and services, making Moscow a retail center where people from surrounding areas come to shop.

In addition to Moscow's business and educational reputations, the city's arts community has gained national attention. The Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, American Festival Ballet, Idaho Repertory Theatre, Washington Idaho Symphony, Renaissance Fair, Rendezvous in the Park and the Prichard Art Gallery are part of the reason Moscow is known as the "Heart of the Arts". Moscow was rated as one of the Best 100 Small Art Towns in America in 1995 and 1996.
