Apopka is located 12 miles Northwest of Orlando and encompasses an area slightly larger than 24 square miles. It was incorporated in 1882. The city limits were measured one mile in all directions from the Masonic Lodge. The "Lodge" is still in its original location on Main Street and is the oldest lodge room in continuous us in the State of Florida. The greater Apopka Area today has more than 45,000 citizens and is one of the fastest growing cities in Orange County. A new limited access highway, now under construction, will provide a convenient and faster way into Orlando. In 1912 ferns became the industry for Apopka and soon Apopka developed the nickname "The Fern City." More tropical plants were introduced to the growers in the area. This influx of foliage took over the fern industry and the City became known as the "Indoor Foliage Capital of the World." Indoor plants are shipped around the world that have been grown in Apopka. Apopka is a wonderful community in which to live. New subdivisions are being developed in all available areas around this city. For golf enthusiasts, Apopka boasts Erroll Estates. This is a challenging golf course on rolling hills. Homes in this golf community range from condominiums to estate style homes. Apopka lies very close to the Wekiva River. Several parks are located nearby along the river for swimming in the springs, canoeing on the river, hiking, horseback riding and picnicking. Other athletic available for the active children and adults are softball and volleyball leagues. Schools: Elementary Schools are Dream Lake, Lovell, Rock Springs, Wheatley, Apopka, Clarcona and Clay Springs. Middle Schools are Apopka and Piedmont Lakes. |
