Population: 10,010 Located in New London County

Once a traditional seaside fishing and ship building village, Groton today is best known as the home of modern submarine technology. The town boasts the most expansive naval submarine base in the western hemisphere, and is the site of the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, a major employer of area residents.

Pfizer Inc., a research and development based health care company and its subsidiaries employ over 3000 people on its 137-acre complex. Despite its transition to high technology as an economic foundation, Groton has retained much of its New England origins. This is evident in the preservation of the beautiful coastal scenery and lovely historic homes and buildings. The Mystic section of town features traditional maritime village structures, originally built by the town's sea captains and fishermen. More contemporary houses, condominiums, apartments, new construction and businesses are found through town.

The Thames River, Long Island Sound and Mystic River form the boundaries of Groton, providing an endless supply of picturesque views and an abundance of pleasant water sports. Swimming, hiking and picnicking are enjoyed on the 800 acres of Bluff Point State Park and Coastal Preserve, one of the state's largest protected sanctuaries. The nature lover will delight in this safe haven for many species of wildlife and native plants. Beebe Pond, Haley Farms State Park and Pequot Woods provide additional areas preserved for outdoor pleasure.

Groton's large school system includes 10 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and a high school. Preparatory coursework for college, special education for the disabled, continuing education for adults and a basic curriculum are highlighted. Private parochial education is available. Southeastern Connecticut Vocational School and a campus of the University of Connecticut represent higher education facilities in the area.
