Kiowa is a small town located in the Western portion of Elbert County. It has been the County Seat since 1874 and is dominantly ranching and farming country. The topography consists mainly of rolling grasslands, however, there are a number of treed areas in and around town, including the historic and beautiful Bijou Basin, where the plains buffalo used to winter. Some spectacular Rocky Mountain views exist around this area and a number of creeks pass through the area. Kiowa is on the fringe of Denver metro growth and the county is committed to keep it's rural character. Commuting into the metro area would exceed 1 hour. |
