Florence is beautifully situated on the Arkansas River, along the eastern range of the Rocky Mountains, one hour's drive south of Colorado Springs and 45 minutes West of Pueblo on the Gold Belt tour just south of Interstate 50. Recreation: Florence is surrounded by fantastic geographical features allowing outdoor recreation of every sort as the Arkansas River runs along the edge of town providing launch points for rafting trips, great fishing spots, and scenic hiking. There are several spectacularly scenic mountain trails are nearby for hiking, horseback riding and rock climbing. Rugged dirt roads wind through the desolate mountain passes providing a place for the brave of heart to drive along cliff edges without guardrails. The Pueblo Reservoir offers water recreation of every sort, including a water park and areas for swimming and boating. The Reservoir displays beautiful cliff sides jutting up near the water offset by the naturally dry terrain and desert plant life of Central Colorado. There are thermal water currents running underground that rise up to the surface in several places surrounding the Florence area; these have been converted into hot springs pools that are available to the public. In the early 1890s the mining towns in the shadow of Pikes Peak enjoyed the greatest gold boom the state has ever known. This 131-mile circuit tours historic Cripple Creek, Florence, McCourt, Adelaide, Wilbur, Victor, and other former gold camps. The Royal Gorge Bridge, the world's highest suspension bridge, hangs between sheer, 1,053-foot granite faces; visitors can explore the man-made wonder further by walking across it, driving over it, riding an aerial tram (the world's steepest) up it, grabbing a train around it, or rafting beneath it.
