Located in California’s Central Valley, Madera (pop. 45,850) offers affordable small-town living on the periphery of a large metropolitan area (Fresno is 18 miles south). Madera is the home of Valley Children’s Hospital, one of the largest children’s hospitals in the U.S. Educational needs are served by the Madera Unified School District, featuring 20 schools; among them is a California Distinguished Elementary School. College courses and training are available through State Center Community College and CSU, Fresno. Yosemite National Park may be the most familiar nearby landmark, but it’s only the beginning. A sampling of events in and around Madera reflect the area’s colorful history: Coursegold Rodeo, Logger’s Jamboree, Sierra Mountaineer Days, Indian Fair Days, and California State Gold Panning Championships, to name just a few. Locally, the city’s seven major parks offer a variety of picnicking and sporting accommodations, and a municipal swimming pool. The par-72 championship Municipal Golf Course hosts a number of tournaments and features banquet facilities. Skydivers and ultralight aircraft pilots need only drive to the municipal airport to indulge their passion. Housing costs in the county are some of the most desirable in the State.
