Fairfield is the premier city of upper Solano County and the seat of county government. Home to an estimated 95,000 people, it is strategically located along major transportation routes interstate 80 and 680, and State Route 12.

Most of Fairfield is served by the Fairfield-Suisun Unified School District, but some areas adjacent to Travis Air Force Base are in the Travis Unified School District. In all, there are 19 elementary schools, 4 junior high schools, and 3 high schools. There is 1 parochial school, 6 private schools, and 2 vocational schools. Locally, higher education is provided by Solano Community College, while several colleges and universities are within acceptable commute distance.

The city boast the county's only regional shopping mall and is within thirty minutes travel of other major shopping centers. There are over 26 parks and play grounds, one private golf course and two public courses.
