The citizens of Burlingame take great pride in their city's heritage and traditions. A vast array of public events fills the city's social calendar each year, including festivals, parades, carnivals and holiday celebrations. Burlingame hosts an Art in the Park Festival and an Art and Jazz Festival, which takes place each August. A Tree Lighting Ceremony takes place each December, in addition to the city's famous Burlingame Avenue Holiday Open House.

Area public school students are served by the Burlingame and San Mateo Union districts, and a wide variety of private and parochial schools are also available. Schools in Burlingame are outstanding. Burlingame High School is a longtime community fixture and graduates frequently become lifelong residents of the town.

The city of Burlingame began life as part of a land grant. The land was given by the governor to a friend to repay a debt. More than a thousand acres were later sold to Anson Burlingame, the United States Minister to China.

Burlingame is home to an extensive network of parks and open space, designed to meet the recreational needs of residents of all ages. Facilities range in size and scope from Mills Canyon-a large wildlife area for hiking and exploring - to Paloma Playground, a small facility for young children. Approximately 15 parks can be found throughout the city, as can indoor recreational facilities as well as a Dog Park. The San Francisco Bay Trail System also winds through Burlingame, providing opportunities for walking and cycling.

As part of San Mateo County, Burlingame is a bedroom community for San Francisco to an extent. This upscale city boasts a thriving economy in its own right, however, and executive suburbs can be found throughout the area. The city draws plenty of residents who want to work in the big city while enjoying the quiet lifestyle and community spirit of a smaller town.

Burlingame residents are understandably delighted to live in such an exciting city, and they have plenty of opportunities to get out and show their community spirit. Every Sunday from May through November, "The Fresh Market" takes place. This outdoor market features a wide variety of fresh produce from local vendors, as well as cooking demonstrations by local chefs and opportunities to get involved with local nonprofit organizations.
