Population: 36,264 Located in Lauderdale County
The City of Florence, founded in 1818, is located on the beautiful Tennessee River in the scenic northwest corner of Alabama. Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and two counties, Lauderdale and Colbert, comprise the Shoals Area.

The history of Florence and the Shoals began when Native Americans inhabited the area. Evidence of their existence can still be found at the ancient Florence Indian Mound. In 1818 the Cypress Land Company was formed to develop a thriving river town. An Italian surveyor laid out the town and named it for his favorite city in Italy - Florence.

The future looks bright for the Shoals, an area that offers the experience of a small Southern town with the amenities of a large city. Florence boasts a state-of-the-art conference center, a marina and harbor, a vibrant downtown area and technologically advanced library. A Robert Trent Jones Golf Course, a new four-star hotel and a beautifully restored Renaissance Tower are also under development.

Florence, Lauderdale County and the Shoals offer a great place to live, work and play.
