Newtown has a proud heritage, tracing its roots back to William Penn, who purchased 5,000 acres from the Leni Lenape Indians in 1683. In 1838 an area comprising of a commercial center and a number of homes were incorporated into Newtown Borough. Today, the Township surrounds Newtown Borough and each has its own form of government. This once rural community has rapidly changed with homes replacing farmland, however, the Newtown Township Board of Supervisors and the Newtown Borough Council have endeavored to maintain the colonial charm of this 300 year old community through a Comprehensive Plan and an Historic District Classification.

The Council Rock School District, rated one of the top school districts in Pennsylvania, covers 72 square miles and serves the Newtown area.
