The Portage Lakes community is varied, and includes many recreational activities, such as boating on the lakes, sailing, canoeing, The Ohio Canal walk/bike Towpath, Firestone Metro Park, as well as the Portage Lakes State Park, casual and fine dining on the water, Firestone Country Club (Public & Private Course), Turkeyfoot Golf Course (a 36 hole course), a newer Senior Center for area seniors, and a beautiful Clocktower overlooking the main chain of lakes.

The Portage Lakes community sits on the southern edge of the city of Akron, hence making it just a few minute drive to the newly renovated downtown area which includes Canal Park, home of the Akron Aeros (minor league team), the Akron Civic Theatre, EJ Thomas Performing Arts Hall (home of the Akron Symphony Orchestra), The Akron Art Museum, and The University of Akron. Downtown Cleveland is just a short 45 minute drive away.

The Portage Lakes community encompasses three different communities known as Green, Manchester and Coventry, each with their own separate school system. (e.g., Green Local Schools, Manchester Local Schools & Coventry Local Schools)
