The City of Lima and the surrounding towns in Allen County "specialize in smiles". As the second-largest city in the northwestern portion of Ohio (Toledo being the largest), Lima is not only an important economic center, but also a great source for arts, culture, and history. An initiative known as the "Main Street Program" is currently underway to pair thoughtful preservation of historic assets with sensible business practices. Lima has also been able to maintain a rather large following of the arts and culture through such attractions as the Lima Symphony Orchestra. Internationally acclaimed artists such as Joseph Marcell, Wendy Warner and Sandra Rivers have appeared with the Lima Symphony Orchestra on stage in Lima's Veterans' Memorial Civic and Convention Center. In addition to music, art comes alive in Lima. Contemporary art has a home in the Victorian-era mercantile building renovated by ArtSpace/Lima on Town Square in the heart of downtown Lima. There's always something new in the changing gallery exhibitions featuring local and regional artists working in all media. In the Gallery Shoppe, original artwork including paintings, jewelry, ceramics, glass, and cards by the area's most respected artists is on display as well as other unique art replicas. Many art enrichment classes, workshops, and special events are offered throughout the year for art-lovers of all ages. Recreation is quite abundant in Lima, with two main park systems. Each park is a little different from the next offering its own unique qualities and specialized programs.
