Kellys Island Village, Ohio
Kelleys Island is both a village in Erie County, Ohio and the island which it fully occupies in Lake Erie. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total permanent population of 367. It is the largest of the American-occupied Lake Erie Islands. It is part of the Sandusky, Ohio metropolitan statistical area.
Kelleys is heavily forested among several residential areas, some for year-round residents, others for summer vacationers. Some small farms and a small limestone quarrying operation exist on the island. Historically, Kelleys Island was the center of limestone production in the Great Lakes when in the late 19th century when 16 limestone kilns produced lime on the island. Also the quarries were home of the Kelley Island Lime & Transport Company, being once the largest producer of limstone and lime products in the world.
Kelleys Island is the largest US island in the western basin of Lake Erie, the Walleye Fishing capital of the world. With a landmass of twenty-eight hundred acres and an eighteen-mile shoreline, the island has a lot to offer. There are a variety of seasonal activities and events, places to explore, and a rich cultural and natural history to discover -- something for everyone!
Kelleys Island is three and one half miles north of Marblehead Peninsula. Most arrive by the Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Line located on State Route 163 in Marblehead, Ohio. You can bring your car or bicycle on the ferry or, once you arrive on the island, rent a golf cart or bicycle. However, the island is also accessible by airplane and private boat. Griffing Flying Service provides daily service from Sandusky, Ohio. Island marinas accommodate visiting boaters.
Camp Patmos, a conservative Christian youth camp, is located on the north side of the island.
The Islanders do most of their non-grocery shopping on the mainland where a private ferry runs to Marblehead, Ohio every half hour during tourist season or on South Bass Island to which a private ferry sends Islanders for 3.5 hours.
The most common types of establishments on Kelley's Island are pubs and restaurants, almost all of which close for the winter season in September and reopen around May. The oldest and arguably most well-known bar on the island is The Village Pump; others include The Caddyshack, Bag the Moon Saloon and The Casino.
