Clintonville is located in Franklin County. Clintonville is a North-Central Columbus neighborhood covering 6.17 square miles of land. Among the unique home styles in Clintonville are several Lustron homes. These houses are essentially all metal. Nearly everything is porcelain coated, including the walls, cabinets, ceilings, sinks, roofs and gutters. There are four such houses in Clintonville, two on Arden Road, one on East Weisheimer Road, and one on East Kanawha. Another unique home, was constructed in 1939 and was described as an "ultra-modern electrified home." The home included futuristic items such as an electric garage opener, a garbage disposal, an electric dishwasher, air conditioning and a gas-fired furnace, items we take for granted today. Other styles common in the Clintonville area include Sears and Roebuck kit homes, 4-squares, bungalows, Dutch Colonials and Larcombs. The Larcomb homes, in particular, met the need for affordable family housing following World War II. The average home price is $175,000 while houses range from $140,000 to $500,000. Clintonville residents have valued education since the 1800s, when one-room log or brick schoolhouses served the area. The first of these was built around 1815-1820. The first substantial school was the Clinton School, a turreted brick edifice built in 1895 on the site of the current Clinton Elementary School. The original building was demolished in 1922. An unusual feature of the school is the pedestrian subway built to allow school children to safely cross High Street. One of Clintonville's unique features is its ravines. These were created by the Wisconsin glacier as it advanced across central Ohio 50,000 years ago and again 16,000 years ago. The ravines include Glen Echo, WaIhalla, and Overbrook (Adena Brook). Two others, the Granden-Torrence and the Old Beechwold-Rustic Bridge have been graded over but still shape the landscape. For sheer beauty, this area cannot be beat, and for one who enjoys the four seasons, this is a paradise! With all the outdoor activities that can be enjoyed year round, Clintonville has it all. Come and enjoy all the aspects of Ohio life in this, the best little city around. |
