Population: 1,052 Located in Dare County

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is an area known for its natural beaches and rich history. America's oldest outdoor drama, "The Lost Colony", brings to life during summers the story of the first English settlement in America. Manteo is no different, and is the capitol for Dare County, located right in the heart of the Outer Banks.

Most real estate on the Outer Banks is sold to out-of-town owners. Some buyers are simply looking to diversify their financial position while enjoying a favorite vacation spot; some want to secure a long-term vacation place for themselves and their families; and others intend to turn their investment into year-round homes at a later date.

The strength of the region is centered in its tourism and in its ability to attract persons to live and work in its resort community. Population growth for the region also continues to rise at a record pace, nearly double the North Carolina average (which is nearly double the national average).

This is a rather select area in which to live, and although there are lots available and even some houses, the prices are steep, as land is limited; much of the area is protected. However, for those who can, be prepared to start your bidding at $450,000 for a 1,400 square foot home, and the prices go on up from there. The homes are beautiful though, and many of the newer ones have spectacular views of the Outer Banks.

Growth in the Outer Banks is steadily driven by the area's ability to attract new residents within its borders - for work, for retirement, and for recreation. The new residents not only bring income and wealth to the area, but they create the demand for housing - which brings construction jobs to the region.

The Outer Banks has much to offer its residents as well as the 7 million visitors, which visit the area each year. We are America's Birthplace, home to four distinct lighthouses, the site of the Wright Brothers' first flight, the largest sand dunes on the East Coast - Jockeys Ridge State Park, the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the new Roanoke Island Festival Park, and a host of family activities including hang gliding, bird watching, museums, art galleries, drama, kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, and more!

Come and see whether Manteo is the place you want to call home - with so many interesting facts and history about the place, you are sure to feel like you are living in a piece of history yourself!
