Come on over! The fishing is GREAT! Here's a beauty caught in the Albemarle Sound... Widely known as "The Prettiest Little Town in the South,"

Edenton, North Carolina has a rich history to go along with its picturesque atmosphere. Incorporated in 1722, Edenton is one of the South's oldest towns and once served as the first capital of colonial North Carolina. It is located adjacent to the open waters of the beautiful and serene Albemarle Sound, the largest body of fresh water in the United States after the Great Lakes, and was a major port and trading center in the early 1800s.

Edenton exists today as a testament to this rich historical past but it has also evolved into an interesting and eventful place to live during the 21st Century.

The tree lined business district hosts inviting shops that cater to both residents and visitors. Tourism and agriculture contribute significantly to the county's economy. On a per capita basis, Edenton is one of the largest boat building towns in North Carolina.

Edenton offers a wide variety of community events ranging from the Chowan County Fair in the fall to the annual fireworks over Edenton Bay on the Fourth of July. This community is the summer home of the Edenton Steamers, from the Coastal Plains Baseball League. Throughout the year many cultural events are sponsored by the Chowan Arts Council.

The first permanent settlement in North Carolina, Edenton is the "mothertown" of the state. Edenton at once became the focal point of civilization in the Province, the capital of the Colony and the home of the Royal Governors. Originally incorporated in 1715 as "The Towne on Queen Anne's Creek," and later as "Ye Towne on Mattercommack Creek" and "The Port of Roanoke," the spot was named Edenton in 1722 in honor of Governor Charles Eden.
