Population: 27,000 Located in Orange County

Like many of the villages in Orange County, New Windsor was named after the famous town of Windsor in England, residence of the royal family. New Windsor, like its namesake is located right on a river, and much of the community life is centered around the river.

This area is a haven for bedroom commuters into Manhattan, which is approximately 90 minutes by car. The area offers excellent and reasonable housing, unexcelled recreational activities, and breathtaking views.

New Windsor is proud of its rural roots and recognizes the importance of its past history. There are a number of museums, historical societies, parks and organizations that preserve the heritage of the village.

While driving along the many country roads in the area it is easy to imagine what the region was like when Native Americans found their way here more than 10,000 years ago. Beautiful river bottom land for agriculture, and a peaceful setting all provided a home for the indigenous peoples that were here until about 300 years ago. It has been over 300 years since European settlers first came to the Delaware River Valley and their heritage is found everywhere.

There are homes suited for every taste, from turn-of -the-century Victorian homes to planned townhome communities. The prospective homebuyer has the luxury of choosing a secluded home or one within a friendly neighborhood. Homes here are reasonably priced, especially in comparison to those in other counties, and you can expect to spend right around $250,000 for a cozy starter home.

The beautiful lands around New Windsor give many places to fish, play, hike, bike, explore or just relax. The Delaware and Neversink Rivers, carved out of the Catskill and Pocono Mountains, provide exciting river experiences. The Delaware River is noted for its exciting rafting trips. Located in this area are nesting areas for American eagles.

One of the greatest attractions of this area is the time of the changing colors of the leaves. Travelers find the impressive views of mountains and valleys changing colors from day to day to be the surprise of a lifetime. Be it spring, summer, winter or fall, there are activities for all.

The New Windsor area is known for its first-rate schools, which are expanding every year to accommodate the new students moving into the area. The schools have a long history of providing outstanding educational environments for their students.

Adult education is especially prominent, and is responsible for producing a well-trained workforce for which the area is known. There are many higher education facilities in the region, including the famed United States Military Academy at West Point. Colleges offering a two-year degree program are Orange County Community College in Middletown, which has an off-site campus at Port Jervis and Sussex County Community College. The area also has several colleges that offer four-year and master's degree programs.

New Windsor evokes images of its namesake with the river right here, and the lovely tree-lined streets. If you're looking for an old-fashioned place, but one with modern conveniences, look no further than New Windsor!
