Montgomery, New York Relocation Guide

When the first settlers arrived here in the early 1700's, they found mostly peaceful Indians. These settlers were Palatines from Germany. They were followed by the Dutch, then the Scottish-Irish and then, the English. Many of the Irish came in the mid 1800's, followed by the Italians at the turn of the century.

Originally, Montgomery was called "Ward's Bridge", because James Ward, an early miller, constructed the first bridge across the Wallkill River, which flows northward around the village. The bridge made it convenient for farmers to bring their grains to his mill.

The settlement has always been a bustling hamlet, boasting the earliest post office between Goshen and Kingston, even before Newburgh. The name was changed to Montgomery when soldiers returned from the Revolutionary War battlefields requesting a tribute to General Richard Montgomery, a gallant Irish-American who offered his life in the battle of Quebec, Canada.

The mission of the Valley Central School community is to develop responsible and productive members of society by providing a quality, comprehensive educational program in a safe and innovative environment, where students are motivated to think critically, communicate effectively, and achieve excellence in active partnership with the community and a knowledgeable and dedicated staff.

Located just 40 miles from Manhattan, Montgomery is one of the most attractive areas in the New York metropolitan area. Affordable housing, excellent school systems, a low crime rate, outstanding road, rail and air transportation, lack of congestion, and a wide range of recreational activities offer unique advantages for business and for living.

Montgomery is a diverse neighborhood, and is more affordable than some of the towns surrounding it. Homes start at $350,000 for a two bedroom home with about 900 square feet and range up to $700,000 for a five bedroom home with approximately 2,300 square feet. Homes are well maintained, and range in age from post WWII to new construction. All of them are built on small city lots that range in size.

Today, due in large part to its good location and fine schools, Montgomery remains one of the most desirable and affordable Orange County communities. Montgomery has the best of everything - a great commute near the Big Apple, wonderful schools and the peace and quiet of a riverside town that just can't be beat!
