Highland Falls is a quaint and charming Village, incorporated in 1906, and located on the banks of the Heritage Hudson River. Situated directly outside the gates of the West Point Military Academy, it has rightly earned the name "Historic Gateway to West Point." The Village of Highland Falls and the many surrounding attractive areas are just 50 miles from New York City and all easily accessible by bus, car, train or boat. The entire area is considered the perfect tourist getaway, even for a day trip. The Hudson Highlands scenery, especially in the fall, is unsurpassed by any other local scenic attraction. Highland Falls has beautiful churches of all denominations steeped in architectural history. There are unique shops, great places to eat and many sites to see. A walking tour of the local historic Main Street area provides the tourist with an adventurous and educational way to see the entire Village, purchase a gift or souvenir and stop for lunch or dinner at one of the many fine eating establishments. The written history of the area dates back to 1609 when Henry Hudson sailed up the River. Early settlement was sparse but there was a marked advancement in growth from the American Revolutionary period to the settling of workers here to build the railroads and work at the Military Academy. The results are magnificent buildings and forts which are featured in several available tours of the area. Source: highlandfallsny.com Photo Source: rockland.org
