Camping, hiking and open-air concerts are popular in the rolling hills of the Placitas area. Mountain biking is great along Tunnel Springs Road in Las Huertas Canyon and on a 10k loop along Forest Road 445 between mile markers 2 and 3 on the south side of #165. Back country hiking is popular along several trails leading into the Sandia Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest and up Las Huertas Creek which is free-flowing all year long. Visit Sandia Cave-a site of prehistoric inhabitation which now has camping and picnic areas. During "apple time," Placitas' organic orchards sell fresh apples and cider. The Placitas Artists Series, running September through May, offers concerts.

Residents of Placitas participate easily in the cultural life of both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The resources of the University of New Mexico are close at hand, as well as museums, art galleries, the symphony, opera and many other musical and theatrical events. Further, the nineteen Rio Grande Indian Pueblos welcome visitors to their colorful and beautifully choreographed ritual dances. Finally, concerts and art exhibits occur frequently in Placitas itself.

Recreational opportunities are nearly unlimited. The Cibola National Forrest is a paradise for hikers and horseback riders. There are cross country skiing trails, camping and picnic areas, and wilderness to explore. For alpine skiing, Sandia Peak and the Santa Fe Ski Basin are very close, while the Taos Ski Valley is only a few hours away by auto. The area boasts 12 golf courses, five private and seven public, with the number continuing to grow. Close by are the Cochiti and Jemez reservoirs, offering fishing and other water recreation activities.

The climate in Placitas is unequalled and makes it an enjoyable place to live year-round. We enjoy four distinct seasons that are all characterized by sunny days. Humidity averages a comfortable 43%. Temperatures average a high of 77 degrees and a low of 42 degrees. Annual rainfall averages about eight inches. Although Placitas receives moderate amounts of snow several times each winter, the annual snowfall averages a total of only 10 inches. Sandia Peak Ski Area, only a 45-minute drive away, averages 183 inches. Overall, the weather is among the best in the world - all the time!
