Borough of Rockaway Borough New Jersey is home to 6,473 residents in Morris County, and covers 21 square miles of land. Rockaway Borough is 18 miles from Wayne, and is closest to the following cities; White Meadow Lake, NJ (1.3 miles), Victory Gardens, NJ (2.7 miles), Dover, NJ (3.2 miles), Lake Telemark, NJ (4.1 miles), Wharton, NJ (4.6 miles), Mountain Lakes, NJ (5.1 miles), Morris Plains, NJ (5.2 miles) and Boonton, NJ (7.2 miles). Rockaway Borough is located approximately 40 miles west of New York City off of routes 80 and 46. Rockaway Borough is serviced by Rockaway Borough NJ Public Schools consist of Lincoln School, Thomas Jefferson School and Morris Hills High School Rockaway Borough is rich in history, in the early in the 1900's, there were two major railroads, a trolley line, an iron foundry, an inclined plane and two basins of the Morris Canal, a bicycle factory, a three story department store selling everything from bonnets to bedsteads, and three hotels, including one that was a favorite of Annie Oakley. When Rockaway Village incorporated as a Borough in 1894, it was already one hundred sixty years old. The first settlers arrived about 1730. By 1760, Rockaway Village had already become the center for trade, manufacture, and religion. General merchandise stores were clustered along Newark Street (now Main Street), with the Presbyterian Meeting House nearby; a grist mill, saw mill, and a forge had been built on the Rockaway River.
