Nutley, New Jersey

Nutley, once the home of the world famous sharpshooter Annie Oakley and the equally well-known Martha Stewart, is just 10 miles from Manhattan. Its approximately 28,000 residents enjoy a border-to-border park with a waterfall and one of the areas easiest commutes to New York City. Located on the west bank of the Passaic River, Nutley was first settled by the Dutch before 1700, and there are several very well preserved structures in town dating back to the late 1700's. Although Nutley is primarily residential in nature, the pharmaceutical giant Hoffman La Roche is situated on its northern border.

Bounded by Route 3 on the north, the Garden State Parkway on the west, and the Passaic River to the east, Nutley is regarded by its residents as a very well kept secret. Dotted with charming neighborhood enclaves such as Nutley Park and the Enclosure, (a turn-of-the-century haven for writers and artists), Nutley has a variety of Colonial, Victorian, Cape Cod, Ranch and Split Level style homes. There are also many condominiums including the recently built and very popular Cambridge Heights townhouse complex. In 2002, home/condo sale prices in Nutley ranged from $28,000 to $710,000 with an average sale price of $271,000.

Nutley has a traditional school system, with five neighborhood elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. In 2002, Nutley spent $8,668 per pupil on education and the average class size was 21. The average combined SAT score for high school students was 1,017. Eighty-six percent of the graduating seniors continued on to further education. Nutley offers advanced placement classes, as well as a Saturday program for the "gifted," which offers a chance for 5th and 6th grade children who participate, to study subject matter within their own field of interest. There are also many extracurricular programs sponsored by the township and the school system.

Nutley has a very fine sense of community and its residents have a tremendous volunteer spirit. There are many civic, social, educational and recreational organizations available for all age groups. There are two town newspapers, a theater group, which has entertained audiences since 1934, and a historical society , which is housed in the Nutley Museum, one of the historical structures of the township.
