Located in Somerset County

First explored by the Dutch in the middle of the 17th century, the area was occupied by the Unami Indians who were a part of the Lenapi Tribe and were considered part of the Algonquin Nation. In 1676, the area was sold to William Penn who later sold several large tracts to Dutch investors. Commercial enterprise soon set in with mills in the Neshanic region dating back as far as 1692. Today, Neshanic is the heart of Hillsborough Township, the largest municipality in Somerset County.

An amicable mix of commercial complexes, residential neighborhoods, and agricultural farmland make up this wonderful rural area. An array of shopping opportunities provide residents with day-to-day needs as well as specialty items ranging from arts and crafts from local artists to fresh produce and dairy from local farms. Delightful eateries dot the downtown district where the smell of fresh brewed coffee and homemade baked goods will soon have you enjoying good conversation and swapping stories with friendly, helpful neighbors.

The Municipal Complex of Hillsborough is located in Neshanic. The public library is housed here and features a great collection of books, magazines, newspapers, audio, video along with reading programs and internet access. Also located in the complex is the Board of Education, Township offices, police department, public works, and the municipal court. All within walking distance to the historic downtown district.

Education is provided through quality academic programs and are provided in state-of-the-art facilities with focus on safety and low teacher/student ratios. The system is comprised of six elementary schools with kindergarten through 5th grade, one middle school with grades 6th through 8th, and one high school with grades 9th through 12th. Pre-school and daycare facilities are available and plenty while private and preparatory academies are some of the best in the nation, including Lawrenceville School, Hun School, Westminster Choir College and Princeton Theological Seminary and Rutgers Preparatory School. Post-secondary education is accomplished through several exemplary institutions including nearby Princeton University, the renowned Institute for Advanced Study, Rutgers University, Trenton State College and Rider College.

Year-round recreation is both abundant and diverse. Neshanic is situated just south of the Raritan River, which offers canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing, and splendid trails for biking and hiking. An hour's drive southwest to Philadelphia and an hour's drive east to New York amplifies the endless possibilities. Community resources offer additional amenities including ballfields, tennis courts, a rec center with programs for all ages, along with beautifully maintained parks with playgrounds and picnic areas. To top it all off, Hillsborough Township was the first municipality in Somerset County to establish an Open Space Fund for the sole purpose of preserving open space and farmland.
