Formerly a part of Freehold Township and Upper Freehold, Millstone Township became its own township in 1844. The town includes many historical landmarks such as the Clarksburg Inn, and the historic villages of Perrineville and Clarksburg, which were important commerce centers during the early 19th century.

Although many new upscale housing developments have been built, Millstone Township still maintains its rural charm with many farming operations that range from Chinese vegetables and regular truck farming to horse breeding. Millstone Township is a tightly knit community, which boasts about being one of the most "well rounded" townships in terms of land use; industrial, agricultural, residential and natural lands that are found side-by-side in a harmonious blend.
