In 1778, the historic Battle of Monmouth took place in Manalapan Township. Formerly, part of Freehold Township, in 1848 it was established as an independent township. Today, Manalapan Township is the home to many landmarks dating back to the 1700's, which allow the township to maintain a historical feel. The battlefield is now a state park with many historical events that occur throughout the year. Agriculture continues to take up a significant portion of the township, residential and commercial development has been growing steadily in recent years.
