Chester Township is a rural community of farms, estates and homes set amidst impressive woods, streams and fields. Continuing well-planned development as a suburb and residential area has characterized its recent past. The 29.6 square mile Township is only partially developed. Home sites include farmhouses beneath towering trees, executive mansions, and scattered development homes. The oldest settlers in Chester Township came in 1640 when "Black River" established itself as a settlement primarily because of the intersection of two Lenape Indian trails. These old trails, used for hundreds of years by the native Americans were traversed by the early settlers to go to all regions of New Jersey. |
