People come from all over the world to enjoy New Hampshire's White Mountains, picturesque seashore, and our numerous lakes and rivers. And then they settled for the very same reasons! Many of them stayed and created farms, which is why Windham was created in the first place. For over 200 years, Windham was primarily a farming and mill community. The town has firmly resisted the influx of industry; and thus, in spite of time and change, retains its "country atmosphere." Today, Windham is a quiet, friendly town. Seasonal residents and permanent residents alike can gather on the banks of beautiful Cobbetts Pond on hot summer days to enjoy cool, clean water. They can visit the historical Searles Castle, now owned by the Sisters of Mercy. The combination Medieval/Tudor structure was created in the early 1900's by one of Windham's most eccentric residents, Edward P. Searles. They may wander through the old section of the Cemetery on the Plain and view the resting places of the town's earliest settlers. Across the street is Windham's newest landmark, the Windham Wonderland Community Playground created specially for the younger residents of the town. On balmy, spring days, pack a picnic lunch and visit the town common. With gazebo and footbridge, it's perfect for relaxing and realizing that Windham still remains a "rural oasis". When you live in Windham, you are less than an hour from all the outdoor adventures that New Hampshire has to offer, plus Windham is only a few minutes from the cities of Manchester and Nashua, and forty minutes from Boston. A once heavily rural area, the town has been transformed over the past twenty-five years into a closely knit community committed to its children and its education. The town still retains its rural charm, highlighted by the sprawling apple orchards that dominate the landscape here. The area's cultural opportunities include fine dining, major symphonies, shopping and world-class museums. Windham offers families the opportunity to live in homes that are surrounded by trees, flowers and beauty. Single family homes are by far the dominant type of housing in town. Homes in this executive area come with a price tag that is a little more than some of the neighboring areas. A 1,200 square foot home costs approximately $200,000. Something bigger, perhaps four bedrooms and a very comfortable 2,500 square feet or more will cost in the region of $600,000 and up. Most homes are built on several acres, which lends a real sense of privacy and seclusion, which is enhanced by the beautiful trees that encapsulate the area. Many New Yorkers have moved to this area because of its breathtaking beauty, lakes and attractive schools and economy. But most of all, people move here for the peace and quiet and rural lifestyle this slice of America offers. The motto for New Hampshire is after all, "The road less traveled." Windham is one of those exquisite, enchanted places - see it once and never leave! Find homes for sale in Windham New Hampshire
