Sitting on the west bank of the Squamscott River, Newfields was part of Exeter until 1727, when it was made part of Newmarket. It was called Newfield Village as early as 1681, then South Newmarket, a parish of that town. In 1880, a resident of the town, Dr. John M. Brodhead, presented his own library and $10,000 to the town on the condition that it be renamed Newfields. That was agreeable to others who were tired of being renamed, so in 1895, Newfields was officially renamed. Newfields is a typical small New England town architecturally. The center of town is lined with older frame houses. Newfields has beautiful meadows, which border the West Bank of the Squamscott River. This gives the community an 'olde world' feel, and when driving through the area you might feel as though you have gone back 200 - 300 years in time! Homes here range in price from the mid 200's all the way up to the millions, and styles vary from small, intimate cottages, to rambling large mountain top homes. Whether you choose to buy a residence here as a primary home or a vacation home, there is something here to suit your taste and your pocket book! Discover for yourself the four season paradise. Spring and summer are filled with swimming, boating, canoeing, water sports, fishing, golf, tennis, biking and hiking and the many state parks that dot the area. Newfields, with its close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean has plenty to do all year round, a fact that is not lost on the residents. Newfields is an easy commute to Concord, Manchester, Portsmouth, and northern Massachusetts. Yet, despite its connection to the wider world, Newfields still remains essentially a rural community - a place of natural beauty and neighborly spirit. No longer a site for shipbuilding, commerce and manufacturing - Newfields has become a family oriented community that is ideally suited for raising a family.
