Francestown, New Hampshire

Named for Frances Deering Wentworth, wife of Governor John Wentworth, Francestown is situated on the Second New Hampshire Turnpike. This was the sole route between Boston and Vermont and the town once collected a toll of one cent per mile from traveling coaches and wagons. Francestown was also the site of a high-quality soapstone quarry, which was mined until the 1890's.

From 1990 to 2000, population in Francestown grew by 21.6 percent to 1,480, a numeric increase of 263. The median age is 40.2, with 27.4 percent under the age of 18 and 11.9 percent age 65 and older. The total number of households is 552, with an average size of 2.7 persons. Of those, 419 are family households, with an average size of 3.0 persons. As of April 1, 2000, there were 656 total housing units.
