Governor Jonathan Belcher as Gorhamtown first granted the town of Dunbarton in 1735. Governor Bennington Wentworth regranted it in 1748 as Starktown after the father of General John Stark. Governor Bennington Wentworth signed the charter of Dunbarton, named after Dumbarton in Scotland, on August 10, 1765. Today this town has around 2,300 residents. Located in the heart of Merrimac County, New Hampshire, Dunbarton evokes memories of times gone by. This area is renowned for its wonderful seasonal changes, and especially for the fall colors. Each autumn, the area's tree-studded landscape bursts with glorious, fiery color, and people come from all over the world to see it. This is still largely a rural area, and is a haven for visitors with an abundance of bed and breakfast establishments. That does not mean, however that there are no houses to buy or even rent here. New construction is being built, and the trend is to follow what has gone before it - large tracts of land with the house hidden from view.
